COASTAL ISSUES: NGO SURFRIDER QUESTIONS EUROPEAN ELECTIONS CANDIDATES

Directives, regulations and laws: 80% of our daily life is governed by decisions taken in Brussels. Consequently, on the occasion of the European elections, Surfrider Foundation Europe is launching the “Vote for the ocean” campaign. The objective? Inform citizens about the environmental issues discussed in Brussels, while holding candidates accountable with regard to the protection of oceans and the coast.

Surfrider Foundation Europe’s “Vote for the ocean” campaign aims to give citizens the ability to place the challenges of protecting the oceans at the heart of the discussions during the European elections. In practical terms, via this Surfrider campaign, European citizens will question candidates around 6 key marine issues.

ASSESS THE CANDIDATES ON THEIR COMMITMENT IN FAVOUR OF OCEANS AND COASTS

At the same time, the candidates of at least 5 member States will receive a questionnaire assessing the extent of their commitment to confront the ecological challenges facing our oceans and coasts. The “Vote for the ocean” campaign is a tool to assess how well the positions and commitments of candidates of the next European elections match Surfrider’s demands and priorities.

Based on the NGO’s working issues and the potential of the legislative calendar, Surfrider has developed a questionnaire built around 6 key issues: Circular Economy, Water Quality and Health, Maritime Transport, Climate Change, Volunteer Work and Citizenship, and Education in Sustainable Development. In practical terms, the NGO will distribute this questionnaire to the candidates and attribute ratings to each candidate based on his/her responses. These ratings will then be published on a website created for the occasion and accessible to everyone: www.surfrider.eu/votefortheocean.

“VOTE FOR THE OCEAN,” A CITIZEN CAMPAIGN TO ACT

80% of member States’ standards are decided within the European Union. This is the case for environmental policies and in particular the protection of oceans, the coast and users; subjects that will be addressed during the next term of office.

To vote in the European elections is to make your voice heard and to help shape the society of tomorrow. This vote is also crucial to place the stakes of protecting the oceans at the heart of discussions in the European Union for the next term of office.

By consulting Surfrider’s “Vote for the ocean” website, citizens will be able to:

–          question the candidates via the social networks and to invite them to respond to Surfrider’s questionnaire, and

–          discover the candidates’ positions on the major marine issues defended by Surfrider.

Voting in the European elections from 22nd to 25th May is a precious opportunity to place the stakes of protecting the oceans at the heart of discussions in the European Union. Surfers, divers, sailors, swimmers or simply lovers of oceans and beaches as well as journalists, educators, parents and students: the “Vote for the ocean” campaign concerns everyone! Seize it, get informed and mobilise your family and friends to vote!
